Maz 38 Senior and 1×12 Convertible Cabs

I have two Dr. Z Convertible cabs for my Maz 38: One has a Celestion Alnico Gold in it, the other a Celestion G12-65.  They are very different sounding, but the G12-65 is new so hasn’t been broken in yet.  I still have to decide if I want to leave that cab close-back or pull the panel off and make it open-back. I like the Gold with the back open.

My first impression of the G12-65 is that it is smooth and round and a bit more American sounding than the Gold.  Anyone who’s played an Alnico Gold knows they have a pretty strong upper midrange that can be quite enamouring, but if your amp is also producing a lot of upper midrange it can get to be a bit much without some adjustments.

The other thing I noticed about the G12-65 is that it is quite a bit less efficient than the Gold.  If I run both together and have the Gold on top, you don’t hear the G12-65 at all.  But if I put the Gold down below and have the G12-65 in my face, I hear both pretty equally.  I may run it like this the next time I play out.

Here’s what it looks like:

Some folks wanted an example of the noise in the dark regions of this shot, which was done at ISO 6400, so that’s why this is here.
